BHA DIV 1 – ROUND 17 – QUT HOCKEY VS BULIMBA HOCKEY CLUB

Bulimba 6 (Justin Douglas 3, Liam Brown 2, Allan Dale) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
After a last-start draw against lowly United, Bulimba rediscovered some of their top form to seal their ninth straight victory over QUT. The opening 15 minutes of the game saw a fierce struggle from QUT to get the ball more than 20 metres away from their own goal, ensuring QUT goalkeeper Blair Burden was kept very busy. Multiple penalty corners were awarded to Bulimba during this time, but the Ibis defence kept deflecting their attempts, with Robert Kruger in particular putting in some impressive tackles. The Bulls finally cracked QUT’s line of defence after almost 20 minutes, with Liam Brown darting through the crowd for a field goal, with assistance from team mate Justin Douglas. Allan Dale further raised the scoreboard in the 28th minute with a successfully converted penalty corner. QUT’s Michael Lehmann was punished with a card from the umpire close to the break, keeping him off field for the remainder of the first half. The second half saw QUT get the ball down the other end of the field more often, giving Bulimba’s Olympic goalkeeper Stephen Lambert something to do by saving a few penalty corners. It wasn’t enough to put them on the scoreboard, with each of the penalties unsuccessful. Bulimba’s offence then kicked into a higher gear, driving the ball down the other end of the field, where it virtually stayed for the remainder of the game. Brown and Douglas proved they were a tight knit combination, working together superbly to get Brown his second field goal for the game, with Douglas rounding out the scoring with three more goals before the final whistle was blown – Tess Lawrence.
BHA DIV 1 – ROUND 16 – QUT HOCKEY VS UQ HOCKEY CLUB

University of Queensland 10 (Daniel Biase-McInally 4, Greg Collins 2, Ashley Hennegan 2, Kieran Powyer, Mitchell Smith) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Five goals in each half, including a four-goal haul to Daniel Biase-McInally, saw University of Queensland record their most comprehensive victory in memory, demolishing QUT by ten goals. QUT would have entered the clash confident of repeating their 4-1 victory against the Redmen from May, but it took only 15 minutes for their arch rivals to assume control of the match and race out to a 3-0 lead. After Aidan Rintala had three penalty corner shots blocked, Greg Collins opened the scoring from a corner variation. One minute after Collins scored again from another penalty corner, Kieran Powyer celebrated his first top-grade goal after five years of trying, diving to deflect in Biase-McInally’s pass, after Shaun Furtado made the initial break. Two more goals just before halftime extended University’s lead to an unassailable five-goal margin, with Rintala’s low flick touched on by Biase-McInally, who then finished off Collins’ run along the back line. QUT’s best scoring chance of the half saw Chris Gilmore, well positioned at the far post, unable to deflect in a Michael Lehmann pass. The rout continued one minute after the teams returned to the field after halftime, with Biase-McInally deflecting Ethan Quan’s pass into the goal. Mitchell Smith netted his first goal of the season for the Redmen, before Biase-McInally shot past Ibis goalkeeper Blair Burden from the top of the circle for University’s eighth unanswered goal. It was then Ashley Hennegan’s turn to add his name to the score sheet, with the defender making the most of a rare chance in the University forward line, netting two goals in four minutes for the Redmen to register a double-digit goal tally – Lee Oliver.

Commercial 12 (Cale Cramer 4, Kye Hawgood 3, David Brain 2, Adam Barry, Joel Torrisi, Dean Rawding) defeated QUT 0 at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.
Cale Cramer scored four goals and Kye Hawgood claimed a hat-trick as Commercial taught QUT a hockey lesson, finding the back of the net six times in each half against the hapless Ibis. Keeping the Cobras scoreless for 20 minutes in the second half was the only high point for QUT, who also lost heavily to Commercial 12-1 in Round 4. David Brain sank a reverse stick shot to open the scoring for the defending champions in the eighth minute, before Cramer scored three goals in seven minutes. Adam Barry extended Commercial’s lead to 4-0, with 15 minutes elapsing before Hawgood scored his first goal with a simple tap-in from the Cobras’ sixth penalty corner of the first half. Commercial’s goal scoring frenzy resumed two minutes after the break, when Brain ran down the backline to set up Hawgood, who then scored his third goal in four minutes with a stunning strike. The forward slid to keep the ball from running over the left sideline, before regaining his footing, beating defenders Mick Lehmann and Tommy Mills with a cross-field run, then sending a shot into the top of the net. The ball hit the top corner again five minutes later when a cracking Cramer strike hit the target. After Joel Torrisi’s reverse stick shot bobbled past QUT goalkeeper Blair Burden, the Cobras didn’t score for another 20 minutes. However, QUT’s resilience was shattered when they conceded two further goals in the final minute of the match, with Brain collecting a rebound from Burden’s pads and Dean Rawding hitting the backboard with one second remaining – Lee Oliver.
BHA Div 1 – Round 13 – QUT Hockey vs Easts Hockey Club

Easts 10 (George Clutton 5, Andy Ridgewell 3, Scott Boyde, Dale Gohdes) defeated QUT 1 (Mark Masefield) at the Clem Jones Centre, Carina.
Five goals to George Clutton and a first career hat-trick for Andy Ridgewell paved the way for Easts’ second straight nine-goal victory against QUT. The final scoreline belied a strong first half performance from QUT that was one of their best 35-minute efforts of the year. The Ibis didn’t take a backward step early on against the Tigers, with Mark Masefield rounding Easts goalkeeper Casey Lee and flicking the ball into the net to cancel out Clutton’s opening score, which saw him dive to deflect in a pass. While Masefield’s goal followed circle penetrations and shots on goal from teammates Anders Kinsella, Rob Kruger and Chris Gilmore, Easts made better use of their scoring chances. Tigers forward Brad Mathers, who set up Clutton for his first score, again gave the last pass for the former Queensland Blades star to claim his second goal seven minutes out from halftime, before Clutton netted from a penalty corner three minutes later to give the home side a 3-1 lead at the break. Clutton then scored his fourth goal eight minutes after halftime and his fifth score, a well struck reverse stick shot that beat QUT goalkeeper Blair Burden into the corner of the net, with 25 minutes left to play. With QUT’s defensive resolve shattered, the floodgates opened for the Tigers. It took Tweed product Ridgewell just five minutes to bring up his maiden hat-trick of goals for the Tigers, to make the score 8-1. When Scott Boyde’s tomahawk shot hit the target and a Dale Gohdes shot powered through Burden’s pads, Easts had notched 50 goals in their past five games against QUT – Lee Oliver.
