BHA Div 1 – Round 2 – QUT vs St Andrews
Round 2 of the BHA Div 1 season for 2011, saw QUT come up against St Andrews.
Below is a review of the game by Nicholas Bolton taken from the BHA website.
Pine Rivers St Andrews 4 (Craig Smith 2, Ryan Gibbs, Luke Reddiex) defeated QUT 0 at the Clem Jones Sports Centre, Carina.
After a false start last week when their match against Easts was abandoned at halftime due to torrential rain, Pine Rivers St Andrews opened their 2011 account with a scrappy 4-0 victory over a dogged QUT outfit, who were also playing their opening fixture of the new season. From the outset Pine Rivers St Andrews were in attacking mode, camped in QUT’s end of the field. The Saints should have led handsomely after 20 minutes, but for poor finishing in front of goal and desperate goalkeeping from QUT’s Blair Burden. Intent on flooding their defensive quarter, the students continued to stifle the Saints’ attempts to play free-flowing hockey, although just when it looked like the two teams would play out a scoreless half, the Brendale-based club were successful with a penalty corner. A diving Ryan Kilpatrick provided the perfect decoy as a Luke Reddiex drag flick found the corner of the box. When Queensland Blades representative Ryan Gibbs snuck a flick between Burden and the post after a slicing backline run only minutes into the second stanza, there were signs that the Saints were ready to make amends for a fruitless first half. However, the Ibis’ spoiling tactics meant the Saints’ attack endured another frustrating half, with a Craig Smith brace of goals rounding out the scoring. Smith showed great reflexes to volley the ball into the net from close in for his first goal, before beating Burden with a drag flick. The final 4-0 scoreline replicated the result from the first Saints-Ibis meeting of last year, which coincidently saw Smith score two goals and Reddiex also find the back of the net – Nicholas Bolton.
