Puzzling Words

Every day, people are bombarded by printed materials. As a result, many are overlooked. ‘Puzzling Words’ is a typographic showcase that is designed to break through the clutter. A set of nine square acrylic block prints present designs created in Downstead, a font I created. Its aim is to overcome the audience’s overexposure to printed media.

By using acrylic blocks as a printing surface, ‘Puzzling Words’ draws in viewers, as the medium is still uncommon and there is an expectation that printed materials are hung on a wall. Moreover, each print in ‘Puzzling Words’ features a Rebus puzzle of a common phrase or saying. The use of a puzzle generates interest because it creates a challenge and curiosity about the message. Rebus puzzles are unlike popular puzzles as they inspire continued thought. People are likely to recall and reconsider their solutions, even after moving away.

Puzzling words has been nominated for The Shape of Things to Come Exhibition, opening March 1 2011 both as an online and physical exhibition at the Block, QUT Creative Industries Precinct. If you missed it at Interchange keep your eyes and ears open for more information.

Interchange Exhibition

Well the Interchange exhibition is all done and dusted. With many hours of work put in by all the event went very well on all counts. Below is a seek peek of the event for those unable to make the event.

The turnout was high on the big night, all their to see the works and their creators. A big congratulations to the makers of Mirror Mirror, who won the Dean’s award, Tyler Alberti for taking out the Bluewire Media web design award.

I would also like to send out a special thanks to all those who voted for Puzzling Words in the people choice. Through your support I took out the prize in a draw with Abstract.

My final announcement for today is that I will be exhibiting, Puzzling Words at Shape of Things to Come, a QUT exhibition aimed at showcasing the future of the Creative Industries. Keep your eyes peeled for more information about this event and both of my projects.
